Endoscopic release of the tarsal tunnel : a suggested surgical approach

چکیده
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is the term used to designate the compression of the posterior tibial nerve within the tunnel or of one of its terminal branches leaving the tunnel. This syndrome is due to a neurogenic cause and affects the area supplied by the tibial nerve. The tibial nerve has three branches: the medial plantar nerve, the medial lateral nerve, and the medial calcaneus nerve. The osteofibrous tunnel is posterior to the medial maleolus, tis floor being formed by the medial talar surface, the sustentaculum tali, and the medial wall of the calcaneus. It is covered by the flexor retinaculum that is posteriorly continuous to the superficial and deep aponeurosis of the leg. The base of the flexor retinaculum corresponds to the upper margin of the abductor hallucis muscle. The most often sites of compression are anatomically related to the pathway established by the surrounding inelastic elements (1,5,7).

Outcomes and safety of endoscopic tarsal tunnel decompression: a systematic review.
Open surgical decompression of the tarsal tunnel is the standard surgical approach for compression of the tibial nerve within the tarsal tunnel. Complications associated with this approach can be significant and periods of non-weight bearing are required. An alternative approach allowing for minimal soft tissue trauma and reduced time to ambulation is therefore desirable. Endoscopic tarsal tunn...
متن کاملEndoscopic tarsal tunnel syndrome surgery using the Universal Subcutaneous Endoscope system
Background/objective Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a relatively rare entrapment neuropathy with the lateral and medial plantar nerves entrapped inside of the tarsal tunnel. When conservative treatment fails, standard open decompression of the nerve can be achieved by releasing the flexor retinaculum of the foot through a several-centimetre-long skin incision made along the tarsal tunnel. By contras...
متن کاملExtensive Osteochondroma of Talus Presenting as Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Report of a case and Literature Review
Osteochondroma or exostosis is the most common benign bone tumor, and occurring frequently in the proximal humerus, tibia, and distal femur. It rarely affects talus. Osteochondroma of talus is a very rare etiology of tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). We report a rare case of extensive osteochondroma of the talus in a 60 year old female presenting with multiple swellings around the ankle and sympt...
متن کاملEnsuring Carpal Tunnel Release: “Drop in”, “Rail Road” or “the Open Door” Sign
Dear Editor, Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common problems faced by people worldwide. It remains a concern for the developed world; although many treatment modalities are available, endoscopic release of the tight compartment is one such treatment modality (1, 2). As in all surgical fields, minimally invasive procedures are preferred over open surgical procedures wherever possible (...

BACKGROUND Posterior tarsal tunnel syndrome is an uncommon clinical entity which is sometimes misdiagnosed in patients with pain of the retromalleolar region and the plantar aspect of the foot. Surgical intervention is recommended for correctly diagnosed posterior tarsal tunnel syndrome. METHODS Selective literature review. RESULTS Surgical treatment is indicated in the presence of dysesthe...
